PRODUCTS. Great matt varnish and armour detail wash

Whilst i paint away at my next batch of Steelfist miniatures, i wanted to share a few products i purchased in recent months.
I think having a blog is not all about showing your painted miniatures but also a place to share your hobby.

For all the years i painted miniatures i had never found a true matt varnish, not one, they always left a semi shine on the surface,  but not anymore, AK interactives ULTRA matt varnish is exactly that, totally matt, and i will say again absolutely flat matt. I still use my Valejo matt varnish as first coat then apply AK  second to get the matt finish.

The second recent product is Citadels NULN OIL wash, the idea of purchase being to see if it was good to tone and detail armour. The results have been superb on Steelfists Landsknechts armour, and has totally replaced my old Valejo wash. This NULN OIL is more subtle and you can build up the layers to the desired depth you seek. If  you hve not tried them and are looking for a product to do the above mentioned jobs , these come highly recommended.

  1. I use the AK varnish for my WWII military models, applied with my airbrush. The result is very matt indeed. I never used it on the figures, mainly because of its very fluid consistency - I have the feeling the protection layer is too thin. Maybe i will try it as a second coat, thanks for the tip.

    1. I agree , perhaps i should have termed it not a varnish but a final matt coat!

  2. Thanks for the heads up re the matt varnish. Like you I have never found one that worked properly, ie totally matt. I have always followed a military modelers tip of gloss varnishing my figures before applying the matt.

    1. This really works Robbie, but as mentioned in comments above, and the way i use it now is varnish as normal then apply second coat of AK to get the dead matte finish. If you buy it remember to check it is the AK interactive ULTRA matte varnish, as they also do AK interactive matt varnish, similar but i guess maybe not as matt as the ULTRA!

  3. I use Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic 1303 to seal my miniatures, then when dry I hit them with Testors Dulcote. But I still have a sheen to them after. Acceptable, but not totally flat. If I can get some of this I’ll experiment with this as a third coat.

    Cheers
    Kevin
