15mm Wars of Roses. Yorkists arrayed.

   Messenger:
My Lord, Duke of Somerset, i bring terrible news, the usurper  Edward  and  his host                        have  gained  upon us, they are but a  mile from Tewkesbury  and advance towards us arrayed  for    battle with some rather nice petes flags banners displayed!

   Duke of Somerset:
Oh bugger, he moved fast, no time to cross the river now, men, advance beyond the Cathederal and array in the fields, i have a cunning plan!

I couldnt help include a bit of humour to this post,  you have got to love our history!

To the Yorkist host:

In the centre is Edward IV, to his left the Duke of Gloucester, and his right Lord Hastings.
At the back is Richard IIIs mounted retinue, not accurate for Barnet and Tewkesbury but could not be left out of the photo shoot!

Now its time to paint some dirty Lancastrians.

15mm WotR.Yorkist minor Nobles

Here is a few bases of minor nobles who fought for the Yorkists at Barnet and Tewkesbury in 1471.

They are bases of ten figures with a mix of men at arms and billmen , with hand painted flags. All the info on these nobles was sourced from the three excellent freezywater books, Heraldic banners of the wars of roses.
For anyone wishing to paint the period these books are the place to go, you not only have most of the nobles Heraldic banners in colour, but it also describes who's side they fought on and in which battles they fought in, i have owned my freezywater books for over 16 years now, and are valued as much now as when i first purchased them, also i have there fourth book Standards badges and livery colours of the war of roses, another outstanding source of info!
   To the figures.

Sir Thomas Strickland and Sir Richard Corbet.

Sir Thomas Wingfield and Sir Thomas Leger

I will try to have a photo shoot of the Yorkists together soon.

15mm WOTR. Earl of Warwick Retinue

More little peter piggies complete, the flags are petes printed flags except the square heraldic banner, which is lord scrope of Boltons heraldic flag, Lord Scrope was a Warwick man and the addition of his heraldic flag adds a bit more colour to the retinue. Next stage is to add four bases of Yorkist nobles, each base will be a mix of men at arms and retinue billmen, all the nobles will have fought for Edward IV at barnet and Tewkesbury!

15mm Wars of Roses. Lord Hastings/ Burgundian hand gunners

Lord Hastings retinue completed. That concludes the boys in blue and murry. With no printed flags available i had to paint these myself, easily enough for the square banner types but the long tailed flags are just to difficult at this scale(i tried).  The last photos are Edward IVs Burgundian handgunners, and the flag is one of my left over prints from the 15mm Burgundian army i did a while back.
I was unsure how to proceed with the Burgundians, i was going to put them in blue and murry livery with burgundian red crosses, and a burgundian flag, then i was going to give them Burgundian livery and white rose with sun in splendour badges, then i was going to give them full Burgundian livery and red cross badge with a Edward IV banner, all with the idea of them displaying some affinity to Edward IV, but in the end i went the safest and most plausable route and painted them straight up Burgundians!

Painting table reorganized

A long overdue re organization of my painting table. I had rumbled along with my Vallejo and foundry paints for many years, and the table had become very cluttered and rather messy, as seen below.     Also many of the paints had cracked lids(the foundry pots) and worn labels, with little paint left in them.

Over the years i have normally got away with a few additions here and there, but had reached the point where a major overhaul was needed. After watching alot of youtube paint reviews( One of the great benifits of todays computer age) i invested in scale 75 paints and also purchased several reaper master paints, all browns to use for horse colours.  First impressions of the new paints are money well spent, both are great, and i plan to add more reaper paints in due time to replace the Vallejo and foundry paints i have left over.
After purchasing the new paints i then bought some paint racks, one made of MDF for Vallejo size paint pots and the other a cheap plastic nail polish rack( another great tip from youtube!) The nail polish rack has the advantage of being able to hold any type of model paint pot.

Next job was to give the table surface a good scrub, wire wool being deployed to remove years of paint splash!

The end result is a lot of old paints thrown in the bin and a lot of new paints sitting nice and organized on my painting table.

15mm Wars of Roses. The Yorkist Brothers

Here is the retinues of Edward IV and Richard III/Duke of Gloucester all complete with a bit of scenery . They are based for Impetus. I have tried to get up close to show details as these peter pigs are at the true 15mm scale . Next up is Earl of Warwick and Lord Hastings, which will be four bases each.
Hope you enjoy the pics!

15mm War of Roses Richard III retinues,Earl of Warwick.

Here is the Ricardian's finished. The foot retinue has him as the Duke of Gloucester.

And here is Richard III as at Bosworth, with extra banners of  some of the knights who fought for him at Bosworth, which  has added some nice Heraldry and colour to the unit

The hole force

And last but not least the Earl of Warwick.

These figures were kindly given to me by Pete of Petes flags
when i ordered some of his War of Roses banner sheets, of which the Earls Heraldic banner above belongs.
These figures apparently are from a short lived wargames foundry range, now long gone(another great range no longer available!). The few Pete kindly sent me are superb, and the ones i have left will help form a command stand for Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou,  thanks again Pete, i intend to make the best use of these delightful figures.

15mm Wars of Roses Richard III cavalry

Heres a batch of Richard IIIs cavalry, peter pig miniatures.I have put Richard on a white mount so he stands out a bit more. In all i am doing 20 of these to make his mounted retenue and to add a bit more pageantry i will include 4 or 5 hand painted banners of the knights that fought with him at Bosworth.

Of course the Royal banner and the long tailed flag here are from the outstanding Petes flags sheets.

15mm English Civil War

Whilst i continue with the Wars of Roses project, i just wanted to share this ECW project i have had on the drawing board for sometime now, but it has not taken priority over my medieval and Italian wars projects of the last few years. However this year i have managed to paint up  a few Royalist Regiments, Prince Ruperts Regt of foot and horse, and the kings lifeguard of horse. I have made the two Regts of horse on the heavy side with some cuirassiers amongst them and most of the red sashes are sculpted with green stuff.

The miniatures are Testudo purchased from khurasan miniatures, the choice was tough with so many out there but in the end these were my choice and wonderful they are, truly delightful 15s, which are actually getting on for 18s! Since i purchased Testudo miniatures, Bluemoon have released a new range, so some elements of there range will be included, certainly the artillery and personalities!
Hopefully i can give this more time when i have managed to get the bulk of those bloody barons of the Wars of Roses painted up!!

15mm Wars of Roses. Richard III/Duke of Gloucester

Heres a start on Richard III retenue( would be more correct in calling it the Duke of Gloucesters retenue) , i have him here as Duke of gloucester, as he would have appeared at battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury, on foot and in the thick of it by all accounts. I will in time be doing the other version of him as king Richard III, mounted with a mounted retenue. Also i have painted up Edward Iv and Richards cannons. The flags are by petes flags,  i have said many times before but will say it again, these are just wonderfull, outstanding detail and quality, they have really added pageantry and colour to the peter pig figures. I do hope he makes a sheet for the Duke of Somerset!!!!!
